BMA "off-year" Olympics

It's been an "off-year" in many ways.  We had a good crew of student-athletes on campus Friday, Feb. 19 so we put on our own games.  This is a long blog-post but hopefully you will have as much fun viewing as we had playing.

Opening ceremonies included "Have you ever?"  A paper plate secured your location in the circle.

We moved on to the challenge of passing a lifesaver with a toothpick in your mouth.

The return trip involved passing a playing card with your mouth.  So gross and so sweet at the same time.

Christopher is making sure that all moves are legit.

Next up: caterpillar racing.

I sure hope this video works.  Ski racers are so coordinated.

This game involved quickly identifying the player on the other side of the curtain.  Winner takes loser.

This one proved more challenging than anticipated.  Carry the skittle across the room with a straw.  20 skittles per team.

Danya's got good technique.

Anna looks so sure.....

Carter thinks not...."How did I end up on this team?"

Burkies are not known for being self-conscious.

This team was going for the intimidation factor.

The Coles are neck and neck.....

I appreciate Olivia's spirit.

And what are games without a math challenge?  The question is in the envelope.

Hmmmmmmm........

It's 1!

No wait....it's 10!!!  As JLo said, you've got to follow PEMDAS.

In the end, the scoreboard was irrelevant.

Closing ceremonies involved a "rain circle" in an attempt to employ the law of similars: like treats like.  Fight the disease with the symptom.  We tried :(

Rowing & Ski Races

Amber created a bracket for a brutal finisher in the gym the other day - 250m rowing races, which was surprisingly or not, super tough. The girls had fun with it though, despite the pain and serious lactic acid build up!
Props to Grondin for the fastest time!
sorry for the blur... lots of movement going on here...

Luci and Brucie go 1-3 for U19s at Middlebury SL

Mardi Haskell - BMA alumna 2012, now at Colby College - wins - full group shot.

Lovely Shawnee Peak

First, Happy Valentine's Day and happy break, wherever you are!

It's been a while since I posted, but I thought this was newsworthy - a bunch of the FIS girls visited Shawnee Peak, Maine (near Fryeburg/Bridgton, ME and North Conway, NH) last week. It was the first FIS race the mountain had ever held so it was pretty exciting for them, (although they do host many high school and junior races). And we were pumped to hit up a new place! It is in the lakes region of western Maine, and as you can see below many lakes surround it. The hill and snow were great and the people very friendly.
And, cheers to Annie for taking the Win on day 2!!

Men's FIS NJR's at Burke

The BMA community rallied to pull off two great days of racing over the weekend and we had some excellent results!  Copied below is an email from our race secretary extraordinaire Dave Iverson and a few candid photos from the events.

Hi BMA Community,

Once again, thank you so much to the entire community for helping pull off these races.  The QBurke staff (especially snowmaking and grooming) worked hard to get us the snow we needed.  As usual, volunteers stepped up and did a great job.  In an ideal world I’d have every position filled a few days in advance.  That said, a lot of places are used to volunteers not showing up for what they signed up for.  At BMA I’m getting used to having a half-dozen people arrive on race day saying, “I didn’t sign up, but I want to help out.”  It’s so much better to scramble to find a job for the person than it is to find a person for the job.
