Book Club - with Nelson Mandela

Book club has met three times now, to discuss Nelson Mandela's autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. The idea stemmed from students who are not taking history this year (mostly sophomores) and Dave and Rachel Chamberlain, who felt it would be remiss not to reflect on Nelson Mandela's life after his passing. There are about ten students involved and a few staff members too. It has been really fun gathering in this informal setting, in Dave and Rachel's apartment, discussing history, politics, human nature, childhood, education, race, revolution, violence and non-violence, and more - all topics raised in Mandela's book. It has been pretty cool to engage in conversation this way. Here are a few photos from last night.

Girls Getting Buff

Each group gets in the gym at least once/week, sometimes more. Here the U14 and U16 girls are getting buff.

The Historic Webber Cup

Alli Price was the fastest female down the Super G track at the Webber Cup at Sugarloaf USA. For that feat she won herself the silver plate! Way to go Alli!

NVC GS at Stowe January 26

The U16 boys had another good day at Stowe on Sunday, January 26.  Not quite the podium sweep from last Monday, but a great showing and excellent skiing all around.

Bill Koch League at BMA

Sarah Dennis took some great pictures of the Bill Koch league practicing on the Nordic track at Burke Mountain Academy on Saturday, January 25.  Thanks to Stu and Lindley for their support of this community program that nurtures future Nordies.

Okemo SG Frog City Race Crew

Burkies have been racing Mid Vermont out of Cindy Berlacks family farm in Plymouth VT for fifteen years. The eighteenth century farmhouse, located on Frog City road, has no internet, cell service, or television. Quite a departure from modern teenage life. On a positive note, the kids ski fast out of Frog City.

Thank you very, very much to everybody who came out and helped at the NVC U16 GS today!  Un-forecasted fresh snow could have been a problem this morning, but many people did a great job of clearing it so that we could get down to a good surface.  From volunteers at parking, registration, setup/teardown, hand-timing, gatekeeping, scoreboard, bib collection, announcing, etc. everybody was where they needed to be, when they needed to be there, and they did a great job at their position.

We got a lot of compliments from our guests today.  You all do a great job of representing BMA.  Thank you again.  Let's keep this going for every race this year!
