Circumburke 2014

It turned out to be a beautiful day for Circumburke 2014!  The majority of the school participated in the ride around Burke Mountain, only those who were injured or taking ACT's missed out on the muddy fun! Riders chose either the 18 mile loop or the full 26 mile loop supported by aid stations along the way.  Thanks to Kingdom Trails and all of the volunteers for a great workout!

Another group shot but not everyone-some had already headed for the start.

The Infamous Timed Hike

It was a wet and mild morning as all (healthy) Burkies put their bodies and minds to the test in the infamous timed hike. The misting cloud through which they hiked actually made it more exciting as they crested the hill where I stood; I could barely tell who was coming up through the whiteness. Matt Price came away with the win for the guys, while Bri Trudeau took the girls'. It was a solid performance for all, including a few brave staff AND U14s who voluntarily participated! I should add as well, that it was also fun to cheer with a few athletes who hiked up but could not participate,  staff, and parents.

Below are some photos as they finished hiking the steep part of Training Hill and started running across the hill and through the woods to the finish. Sorry for the blurry photos in some cases, you can clearly see that they are moving!

Soelden World Cup

I'm in Soelden Austria as a guest coach with the US Ski Team.  I've been here for almost two weeks now and things are really starting to ramp up.  We had a lot of snow the last few days and the hill is being prepared for the race with injection.  Ive been working a lot with Mikaela and she is getting ready to rip.  She has had the last three days off and is feeling good about her skiing.  Here are a few pictures.

The Mighty Phalanx

Brandon here posting for Dave Chamberlain:

We are studying classical Greece and Rome in World History. Rather than allowing their soldiers to fight in one on one combat the Greeks arranged their armies in a phalanx formation. This strategy was in keeping with Greek political ideas about the importance of the community over the individual.  For the most part, our formation stayed together even when bombarded with missiles (water balloons).  We did lose one Greek hoplite whose desire to slay barbarians overrode his good judgment.  We carried him home on his shield.

Gettin' Strong

A few shots from Monday's workouts. The U16 Mountain Strong group hiked to the top of Burke this morning and it was a bit frosty up there. Other photos are of the girls doing strength on the outdoor gym. It was a pretty cool sight to see 20+ girls all working hard out there together.
