Eight of us just got back from a
memorable Memorial Day Weekend trip to Wheeler Pond. As the weekend
approached, the weather forecast continued to get nastier, finally
culminating in a prediction of snow. As we were leaving several
people commented that it was a bummer about the weather. I assured
them that Burkies didn't worry about such things. Their response
tended to: "yeah, they'll come up with other ways to have fun."
That's not what I meant. The kids on this trip (and the plans
they've made) were indifferent to the weather. Sure enough, when we
arrived at Wheeler Pond, there was snow mixing in with the rain.
Once we got the wood stove going in the cabin, three of us headed out
for a hike. From an overlook we saw the others canoeing in the pond.
Once it was obvious that the stove had enough power to roast the
interior of the cabin, Fredrik decided to go swimming, followed by
Harry, then followed by Dani, Anna and Moriah, and finally by Mike,
Audrey and myself. The late afternoon brought with it some thunder
snow. Dusk and darkness brought more canoeing. Cleaning up after
our return to campus on Sunday morning, I commented to a die-hard
Wheeler Pond veteran that this once maybe one of the best trips.
It's hard to judge, but he agreed that the ratio of positive attitude
to adverse weather was definitely high on this trip.
