Slush Cup Chemistry Challenge

Chemistry Challenge for a slushy morning:

This is a difficult challenge, so I am going to up the ante considerably. The BMA math/science department is offering a $100 cash prize for a mathematically and scientifically correct answer that is reasonable given real-world uncertainties.

As I wait for Eastern Cups to happen, I'm looking up at Nolan Kasper's slalom course. They placed salt-bags every seven gates. Each bag is 50 pounds of Sodium Chloride. Make assumptions about some unknown information and calculate the temperature of the snow that is treated in this manner.

The depth, detail, quality and presentation of your solution matters much more than the actual answer you come up with.

This contest is open to students, alums, parents, faculty, everybody. It's an open challenge.

Deadline for submission of solutions is 5pm, April 15th.
Submissions must be emailed to diverson@burkemtnacademy.org

Getting "Civilized"

We did our best to take advantage of Salt Lake City's urban and cultural sights this afternoon.

The Mormon Temple

Hail! And flowers!

Learning about the Mormon religion and history

Like real city types, we took the light-rail into downtown. And here some show off their new shades.

BMA U16s at U16 CANAM, Mont Tremblant, Québec March 20 - 23

Despite challenging weather (which resulted in the cancellation of the men's GS), challenging course conditions and an interesting approach to race organization that can only be characterized by the oxymoronic "Québecois logic", it was a very fun and successful 4 days at the U16 CANAM Intersport series.  Organizers were grateful for the show of support from Vermont programs, and USA athletes garnered many of the top spots.  Some photos of BMA athletes at the awards ceremonies:

Men's slalom podium - Liam McKim 1st, Chris Jones (GMVS and Québec) 2nd, to Liam's right.
Congratulations to GMVS athletes Chris Jones (from Québec) and Alli Nullmeyer (from Ontario) for taking the overall awards.

The Ferry to Whiteface

For some of the last few races of the season, the FIS girls took off for Whiteface for the weekend. Despite some disbelief from the whole crew that a ferry ride was required, we did take a windy ride from Vermont to New York.

Here's proof!-

Super People

Parker and Ronnie wearing matching Superman shirts. Ronnie Berlack ('12), who had a successful year with the US Ski Team and racing Nor-ams and in Europe, came back to BMA to rehab his knee. It's been nice having him around again. I'm pretty sure every one who passes through the gym has seen him there!

Well, the sun is shining, even if it's not warm!

Nordic team visits the training hill! L-R Ava Kate, Carter (admissions visitor) and Warren
Jennette and Sophie BOTH took crashes today that put their braces through their lips. There was a lot of bloody guaze in the warming hut and somewhere some unhappy orthodontists. Eww.
