Where's Waldo?
Amber and Libby are celebrating Halloween while on route to Colorado. They're driving a vanload of skis, gates, and equipment for the BMA Alpine Camp at Loveland. Hopefully they've got a bag full of candy corn and Halloween chocolate to fuel their way. Safe travels ladies!
The rest of the crew will fly west this weekend.

CircumBurke 2013-Remembering Amy Dombroski
All current able bodied students and a few staff
participated in the third annual Circumburke Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday,
October 27 in memory of alumna Amy Dombroski. Circumburke is an event organized and
sponsored by Kingdom Trails, Conservation Collaboratives and the Burke Area Chamber. Participants are " invited to push their limits
over the “wild side” of Burke Mountain on rarely used singletrack and
logging trails, through forests and fields. Surrounded by breathtaking fall
scenery, the Circumburke is an adventure for all."
We thought the event was appropriate because it not only
captures Amy's spirit, it was conceived as and is a celebration of Dave
Blumenthal ‘s life. Dave was an avid
endurance athlete, adventurer, industrial and museum exhibit designer, writer
and artist who lived in Montpelier, Vermont. Dave died tragically while
racing in the 2010 Tour Divide, a 2,745 mile,
self-supported mountain bike race across the spine of the Rockies, from the
Canada to Mexico.
The BMA community read Bryce Hubner's article,
"Remembering Amy Dombroski," in reading period on Friday, October 25
for inspiration. All BMA participants
wore a "green for grit" ribbon in remembrance of Amy.

More workout pictures
Here are a few more pictures from Sandpits, since it's so photogenic! Also, some pictures from the Mountain Leg Routine yesterday afternoon. This week is a heavy week for the girls, with Timed Hike Preview on Monday morning (typical quote: "if that was the preview, I'm going to die. There is no way I can go any faster than that!") Mountain Leg Routine, a couple lifts, and actual Timed Hike on Friday morning. Mountain Leg Routine is a classic, tough Burkie workout - the mountain is our gym! - but it sure is a beautiful scene for suffering!
First snow
BMA woke up this morning to a somewhat surprising first snow. It had been in the forecast earlier, but was then removed.
Remember to watch Mikki race on Saturday!

Thank You Mom and Dad!
Thank you mom and dad for that fancy calculator!
Algebra 2 students learned to solve a system of equations in three variables with pencil and paper. They then learned about matrices, matrix multiplication, and determinants and were able to apply Cramer's Rule to solve a system of equations, again "by hand." After a few days of torture, I taught them how to use their graphing calculators to enter matrices, find determinants, and perform matrix operations. They were psyched! It may not appear so in the photos, but ask them about it.

Ava and Sarah. Sarah has to reference her user manual since she has a Casio.
Sven's calculator just arrived!
Sophie is so glad she has her name engraved on her calculator.
Anna is a pro!

Beloved Sand Pits
On Friday all the athletes participated in one of their most beloved workouts: Sand pits. Amber and Bryna set a couple challenging courses which included a big jump, steep downhill sections, and uphill sections. Dave Iverson came along to time the athletes using our new Microgate timing system. The athletes took run after run, motivated to beat their own times - and others'! But all in all, I think they had fun.
Below are LOTS of photos of the athletes bashing through and running around gates, as well as smiling as they hike the hill to take another run.
